Spring: Prepare Your Cooling System
Before the hot weather arrives, give your air conditioning system the attention it needs. Replace your air filter and make sure the outdoor unit is clear of debris, leaves, and vegetation. Check that all supply and return vents inside your home are open and unobstructed. Schedule a professional AC tune-up to check refrigerant levels, clean the coils, test electrical components, and verify proper airflow. A well-tuned system runs more efficiently and is far less likely to break down during the peak of summer.
Fall: Prepare Your Heating System
Before the first freeze, schedule a professional furnace inspection. A technician will check the heat exchanger for cracks, test the ignition system, inspect the burner assembly, verify gas pressure, and test all safety controls. Replace your filter again, test your thermostat, and make sure your carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries. This is also a good time to seal any drafty windows or doors that could make your heating system work harder than necessary.
Year-Round Tasks
Some maintenance tasks should be done regularly throughout the year. Check your air filter monthly and replace it when it looks dirty. Keep the area around your outdoor AC unit clear of debris and maintain at least two feet of clearance on all sides. Listen for unusual sounds from your furnace or AC and call a professional if you notice anything concerning. The sooner a problem is addressed, the less expensive it tends to be.
